Press Release - October 3, 2025

As The Reckoning Project (TRP) moves into its fourth year, our mission to document atrocity crimes and transform testimonies into powerful tools for accountability, media, and advocacy continues to grow. This month, we are proud to announce our key initiatives and the expansion of our team to lead them.
Launching TRP’s Sudan Initiative
This month, TRP is formally launching a new documentation initiative in Darfur, Sudan. Our work will center on training Sudanese researchers and collaborating with trusted local partners to collect survivor testimonies—with a focus on cases of conflict-related sexual violence—that preserve the integrity of the witness. These testimonies will support future legal processes while also fueling media projects that preserve memory, elevate survivor voices, and keep global attention on Sudan.
This work will be led by Jehanne Henry, TRP’s Sudan Country Director. Jehanne is a human rights lawyer and researcher who spent over a decade as Director in Human Rights Watch’s Africa Division, leading fact-finding missions across Sudan, South Sudan, and East Africa. She has advised Sudan’s transitional government, worked with the United Nations and international tribunals, and is widely recognized as a leading voice on Sudan’s human rights crisis.
Expanding TRP’s Legal Team
Our legal work continues to evolve as we pursue accountability across multiple jurisdictions. TRP is expanding its legal team to strengthen submissions to judicial and quasi-judicial entities, including the International Criminal Court and UN treaty bodies. Our legal focus spans from targeting high-and mid-level actors to exploring complex themes such as socio-economic rights violations, the militarization of youth, and culpability of occupation authorities.
This effort will be led by Wendy Betts, TRP’s Chief Counsel, in tandem with our newly appointed Director of Legal Affairs, Christopher “Kip” Hale. Kip is a veteran attorney specializing in atrocity crimes accountability with significant experience leading investigations in the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia for the UN and other entities. He has served in senior roles at the Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group for Ukraine, the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Libya, and the American Bar Association as well as an prosecutor at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and an advisor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. His leadership will be instrumental in shaping TRP’s next phase of legal strategy and investigations.
Establishing TRP’s Research Unit
TRP has also launched a new Research Unit, formalizing our analytical work and strengthening our advocacy outputs. This unit will ensure that the testimonies collected in the field are utilized to their fullest extent, producing concise analytical briefs for targeted use with UN bodies, the OSCE, the Council of Europe, U.S. Congress, European Parliament, and the UK Parliament.
The Research Unit is led by Roman Avramenko, TRP’s Director of Research. Roman is a leading expert in documenting international crimes with more than a decade of experience, including over 70 field missions across Ukraine, Crimea, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. As co-founder and former Executive Director of Truth Hounds, he has trained hundreds of human rights defenders, prosecutors, and investigators in documenting and prosecuting conflict-related crimes.
Looking Ahead
TRP’s work in Ukraine continues while we broaden our efforts to new contexts such as Sudan. With an expanded team and strengthened expertise, we are deepening our impact—transforming survivor testimonies into evidence, advocacy, and storytelling that keep global attention on atrocity crimes and press for accountability across regions.
