High-level international experts address war crimes and disinformation

In partnership with the Stockholm Centre for Eastern European Studies and with support from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, The Reckoning Project convened a high-level international symposium addressing war crimes, disinformation, and impunity in Russia's war against Ukraine and beyond.

The Stockholm Symposium on Accountability and Disinformation in a Turbulent World brought together leading international experts, policymakers, and human rights advocates for a day of critical debate and collaboration.

The Reckoning Project CEO Janine di Giovanni opened both the closed-door and public sessions, framing the day's discussions around the urgent need to center truth and accountability in the face of systemic atrocities.

In four thematic panels, experts addressed the deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children, the evolution of Russian war crimes from Chechnya to Ukraine, and the strategic role of Kremlin disinformation. Among the panelists were senior Ukrainian officials, legal experts, and researchers from TRP, Yale, IPHR, and PIJL.

The evening session at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern was a sold-out event with over 200 attendees. Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Benjamin Dousa gave opening remarks.

The high-level panel discussion was moderated by journalist Karin Hübinette and featured distinguished speakers addressing the challenges of ensuring accountability in the face of ongoing disinformation, impunity, and global instability.

TRP presented the findings of over a year of sociological research on disinformation-vulnerable audiences, focusing on attitudes toward the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia and its broader consequences.
