The Reckoning Project Submits Evidence to African Union and United Nations Fact-Finding Missions for Sudan

October 16, 2026

The Reckoning Project (TRP) presented evidence of ongoing human rights violations in Darfur to the African Union’s Joint Fact-Finding Mission on the Human Rights situation in Sudan at the opening of the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR), held in Dakar, Senegal, in October, 2026. TRP submitted similar evidence virtually to the United Nation’s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan in August, 2026.

Four years into the war, Sudan is widely-acknowledged to be the world’s worst humanitarian and human rights crisis. Sudan’s belligerents – the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) – and affiliated groups have committed serious atrocity crimes with impunity since fighting broke out in April 2023. The violence has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions; tens of millions live in conditions of extreme deprivation and food insecurity and famine has spread in multiple areas.

TRP’s submission focuses on Darfur, the western region of Sudan that is largely under control of the RSF, and includes evidence of crimes by RSF fighters during their take-over of El Fasher, North Darfur, in October 2025, and other patterns such as arbitrary detentions, torture, enforced disappearances, and widespread sexual violence. The submission also details the use and recruitment of child soldiers by various armed actors, and SAF’s deadly drone strikes on civilians, in violation of international humanitarian law.

The United Nation formed its Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan in late 2023, while the African Union and ACHPR established a Joint Fact-Finding Mission (JFFM) in 2024. Both are mandated to investigate alleged violations and abuses of human rights and international humanitarian law arising from the conflict with a view toward accountability, and have issued several reports documenting serious crimes.

During the recent ACHPR session, TRP co-hosted a side-event on pathways to accountability for atrocity crimes in Sudan and participated in other panels focused on the situation of human rights defenders, protection of civilians and transitional justice. TRP joined calls for implementation of the FFMs’ wide-ranging recommendations including deployment of a peacekeeping force and establishment of an international accountability mechanism.
