The Reckoning Project recently participated in two high-level international briefings focused on our work documenting, investigating, and helping build legal cases related to the enforced deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children and civilians from Russian-occupied territories.

On April 22nd, we convened a closed-door roundtable hosted by the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in New York. The discussion brought together delegates from 20 EU member states and Canada for an in-depth briefing on our documentation of the forced displacement, abduction, and indoctrination of Ukrainian children in occupied territories.

TRP participants included CEO, Janine di Giovanni, Chief of Staff, Kip Hale, and Ukraine Country Director, Maksimas Milta. Drawing from more than 200 legally admissible testimonies, the briefing examined patterns of coercion, identity erasure, occupation policy, and child indoctrination, while outlining how TRP’s evidence has contributed to submissions before UN mechanisms and broader efforts to advance state and individual accountability.

Less than two weeks later, on May 4th, we participated in a second major international briefing at the OSCE in Vienna, focused on Russia’s coercive displacement practices in occupied Ukraine, aimed at various groups of civilians. Held in partnership with the Ukrainian, UK, and EU Missions to the OSCE, the event brought together over 90 diplomats, including dozens of Permanent Representatives to the OSCE.

TRP participants included TRP Senior Advisor and Acting Director of EPIK, Fredrik Wesslau; Ukraine Country Director, Maksimas Milta; Senior Legal Advisors, Jack Sproson and Tsvetelina van Benthem; and Researcher, Nadiia Shvadchak. Drawing from our field investigations and legal analysis, the briefing examined how detention, torture, intimidation, and coercive governance structures are being used to forcibly displace civilians from occupied territories in violation of international law.

Across both New York and Vienna, we underscored the importance of rigorous documentation in building future accountability cases. We are deeply grateful to the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland and to the European Union for making these briefings possible.
